Fishing
Kalymnos is known around the world as the “Island of Sponge Divers.” The sponge divers of old, clutched the “skandalopetra” in their hands, a stone that helped them dive faster due to its weight, but also had other uses such as utilizing it as a route navigator and raising or lowering the pace of diving. Divers nowadays have the necessary equipment to accomplish a safe dive. However, to keep the place’s history alive, events are held every year to demonstrate this way of diving.
It is worth noting that Kalymnos has the only certified School of Diving Training, which reports to the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy and provides state certification after a rigorous training program.
